The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is a charity very close to our hearts at Buttercups and we continually raise funds in memory of our dearly missed colleague, Adam Jephson. Similarly, our Head of Professional Development, Paul Johnson, is a trustee of Pharmacist Support and their work to support pharmacy students, pre-registration trainees, pharmacists, retired pharmacists and their dependents is something that we truly value. Proceeds from the Buttercups Excellence Awards Ceremony will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Pharmacist Support.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to fighting for a life unlimited by cystic fibrosis (CF) for everyone affected by the condition.

Our mission is to create a world where being born with CF no longer means a life-long struggle, when everyone living with the condition will be able to look forward to a long, healthy life.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 10,400 people in the UK. You are born with CF and cannot catch it later in life, but one in 25 of us carries the faulty gene that causes it, usually without knowing.

The gene affected by CF controls the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. People with cystic fibrosis experience a build-up of thick sticky mucus in the lungs, digestive system and other organs, causing a wide range of challenging symptoms affecting the entire body.

We are working towards a brighter future for everyone with cystic fibrosis (CF) by funding cutting-edge research, driving up standards of care and supporting people with the condition and their loved ones every step of the way.

In 1851 the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain set up a benevolent fund to support the needs of its members which continued to exist until 2006 when the fund was re-formed as a new independent charity by the name of Pharmacist Support. Run by a Board of Trustees, the aim of the charity is to provide financial assistance and pastoral support to pharmacists and their families, former pharmacists and pharmacy students.

The range of services that Pharmacist Support provides is impressive. Whether it’s an informal chat to a stressed-out student, employment advice to a pre-registration trainee facing discrimination or financial support for a pharmacist who cannot work because of ill health, Pharmacist Support are there to help. Pharmacy can be a stressful profession so a welcome recent addition to the charity’s services came following the receipt of a legacy from a former pharmacist, Robert Wardley. The Wardley Wellbeing service provides workshops to members of the profession to help them better deal with stress, build resilience and develop assertiveness in the workplace.

It was Buttercups Training’s dedication to supporting pre-registration pharmacists which led to stronger links with the charity, when early in 2017 members of the Professional Development team became the first company Pharmacist Support Ambassadors. This role has enabled our tutors to raise awareness of the charity to a wider audience when attending events at schools of pharmacy and through our pre-registration training programmes as well as helping to do some ever-important fundraising. To date Buttercups staff have raised money through various activities and a future sponsored mountain climb has even been rumoured. In December 2017 Buttercups’ Head of Professional Development, Paul Johnson, was appointed as one of the charity’s trustees.
